I recommend checking out Harpers Ferry in WV, Antietam and Gettysburg. If you want to go a little further, there are three battlefields in the Fredericksburg, VA area - Spotsylvania, Chancellorsville and Spotsylania. Fredericksburg is a cool town with numerous 18th century buildings. If you want to travel even a little farther still, you may want to check out the Petersburg Battlefield. If you go to Petersburg, be sure you check out Pamplin Park. Pamplin is privately owned. It has an excellent museum, well preserved earthworks and a number of well preserved houses. Pamplin is where the Union army first broke through Lee's Petersburg defenses. Appomatox Park is well worth seeing. In fact, if you go on the Civil War Trails website, you can get a map that follows Lee's retreat from Petersburg to Appomatox. Whether you go east or west, I'm sure you will have a great time.

Mick G.Mick G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/00906957046292548350noreply@blogger.com
